University of Žilina - UNIZA (www.uniza.sk) as a public university provides education at all three levels of higher education (Bachelor’s degree, Engineer/Master’s degree and Doctoral degree) in both full-time and part-time forms. Approximately 11 000 students currently study at seven faculties in all forms of study. Cooperation with foreign universities enables students and teachers to participate actively in international educational and research projects. Within its ERASMUS Programme, the University – as the only one in Slovakia - has been listed among 40 most successful universities of the EU in the field of teacher mobility for a ten year period.
The studies at Faculty of Security Engineering are technologically and managerially oriented. The study programmes are oriented to the problems of technological, economical, property and capital security, to safety at work, protection of persons, fire protection and solution of overall emergency, disaster and crises situations. Furthermore, the programmes cover environmental problems including dealing with natural disasters and catastrophes, and specifically to the problems of critical phenomena in transport infrastructure, transport modes and logistics, too.
The scientific work of the Department of Fire Engineering is focused on organizing and technical provision of fire protection, fire safety of civil engineering and tunnels on roads, fire engineering with an emphasis on safety and fire equipment and fire protection in technological processes, life-support systems, implementation of the rescue work in emergency conditions and action of Fire Services units within the Integrated Rescue System. The department cooperates with domestic and foreign partners in the field of fire protection, e.g. in Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, etc. The department provides teaching domestic and foreign students within many subjects in fire-chemical laboratory, where they do also practical tests for their final works.
