University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Technical Sciences from Novi Sad, in cooperation with Higher Education Technical School of Professional Studies in Novi Sad, National Fire Protection Association and European Youth Parliament, organized first international symposium Knowledge For Resilient soCiEty - K-FORCE 2017, within Erasmus + KFORCE project. The symposium was held on 14th of September, 2017 at the University of Novi Sad.
Climate change, fast urbanization and new technologies, in interaction with irresponsible human activities, cause the need for multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary engineering competencies, knowledge and skills. Considering these, available higher education is insufficient and unsustainable at regional level without modernizing and further development.
Numerous human causalities, significant material damages and negative environmental impact of natural and manmade disasters and fires in the Balkans are the warning calling for change of approach to these issues. Resilient societies are based on knowledge and training, as well as preparedness. Building synchronized regional capacities in higher education in Disaster Risk Management and Fire Safety Engineering, according to regional needs and contemporary trends, is a first trend towards building resiliency of our region.
The symposium was dedicated to current issues in education, profession, science and practice in the field of Disaster Risk Management and Fire Safety Engineering During this symposium we had fruitful discussions about various important topics in the field of Disaster Risk Management and Fire Safety Engineering, including:
- Natural hazards in Western Balkan Countries
- Fire hazard in Western Balkan Countries
- Financial resilience to hazards
- Safety culture challenges in Western Balkan Countries
- Contemporary disaster risk management and fire safety higher education
- Case studies in risk analysis and modelling
- Current practice and researches in disaster risk management and fire safety
The contribution was made by 70 authors and co-authors from 10 countries, namely: Denmark, Sweden, Slovakia, Macedonia, Hungary, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, and Serbia. In total, 34 papers were presented at the Symposium, among them 4 invited lectures.
We would like to conclude that the Symposium was very successful regarding quality of papers and discussion. Significant effort to improve education, profession, science and practice in the field of Disaster Risk Management and Fire Safety Engineering has been made.
